180-Day Ineligibility Period for Transfer Students
PDF Print E-mail
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –  The New Mexico Activities Association’s Board of Directors recently
approved that students who “transfer” on or after March 1, 2011 will be declared ineligible for
varsity participation for a period of  180 school days.   If a student establishes a bona fide residence
and meets all eligibility requirements, they are not considered a “transfer” student and will be
immediately eligible.
The more than 160 NMAA member schools approved the 180-day transfer rule via referenda in
December of 2010; for the past four years, “transfer students” have been declared ineligible for
varsity participation for a period of 90 school days.
The Board of Directors approved the Commission’s recommendation by establishing the start date
of March 1, 2011 at their regularly scheduled meeting on January 26, 2011.
As defined by the NMAA bylaws (Section 6): A transfer Student is a student who attends a high
school outside his/her designated attendance zone or who transfers and resides with someone other
than parent(s) after his/her initial open enrollment choice, or transfers to his/her home district school
after an open enrollment choice.
If a Student leaves his/her previous school in good standing, the student is ineligible for varsity
level participation for 180 (effective 3-1-11) school days.  School days are determined using the
official local school district’s calendar and does not include summer school.
